Trust Him! And Rest in Him!

In God I trust – Psalm 56:11

Trusting means having confidence in God that He will lead, He will protect, and He will care in every situation. When we drive to another location, we have confidence in our cars that it will carry us as we drive alongside. We have confidence on the wheels that will carry us safely. Also, when we buy cars, each one has a preference for cars based on its make. Like wise, while buying homes, we look for various reviews to see the credibility of the builder. Looking for colleges, parents look for the reputation of the colleges to make sure children get the right education. In short, we trust in an object based on its origin. David knew where to put his trust. He learnt to put his trust on his Maker. As you know, David was a great king, great warrior, great musician, great composer, and a writer. He had 100s of men who were dedicated to carry out his commands. He did not put his trust in his strength and ability. He said, “I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory” (Psalm 44:6). Even when he was young, he did not believe in his strength to fight and overcome Goliath. At that tender stage, he said, he is not going against the giant Goliath with his own strength but relying on the strength of the Almighty God (1 Samuel17:45). In spite of all his abilities and strength, David says, “In God I trust.” How about you?

Many times we rely totally on own ability and the ability of some imaginary super power figures in our lives for success. So then should we not rely on our ability? No. We should rely on our strength that helps us gain self-confidence and it improves self-esteem but not totally rely on it. A quote says, “When men rely on their own strength and work, they work and work; but when men rely on His strength and pray, God works.”

Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860 – 1941) was a famous Polish panist, composer, diplomat, politician and the third Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland. In his young age, while excelling in his piano playing skills, once Jan Paderewski, was to leave his native Poland to play his first recital in London. He asked an influential statesman to give him a letter of introduction to a leading figure in Britain's musical world, who might be of assistance should anything go wrong during his trip. The letter was handed to him in a sealed envelope. He hoped that everything would proceed smoothly and he would not have to use it. He wants to use this letter as a last resort. During his trip to London, for some reason, Jan did not use the letter. His debut was a great success, no problems developed, and he successfully returned to his native Poland. Some years later, while going through his old papers, he came across the letter and opened it. It read: "This will introduce Jan Paderewski, who plays the piano, for which he demonstrates no conspicuous talent."

Most times our trust in influential men goes futile. That is why David in his wisdom said in Psalm 20:7, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God”. It is enough we trusted men who do not walk their talk and it is time to trust in the One who is faithful to all His promises (Psalm 145:13). It is time now to trust in the unfailing promises of God. It is better to trust and take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust and take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in princes (Psalm 118:8-9). What these verses convey in short is, “If your trust is in men, you fail, but if your total trust is in God he will never fail you.

Trust Him when dark doubts assail thee,

Trust Him when thy strength is small,

Trust Him when to simply trust Him.

Seems the hardest thing of all,

Trust Him, He is ever faithful,

Trust Him, for His will is the best,

Trust Him, for the Heart of Jesus

Is the only place of rest. (18 century poem – unknown source)

If you trust in men, you will have to go after him, but if you trust in God, He will come after you! Do you trust a promise keeper or a promise breaker?

Prayer: Lord, help me to trust you at all time and rely on your grace alone for my life, my family, my work, and my ministry.

May you have a God-centered great week-end!
