Faith
– A Basic Foundation in a Christian’s Life - II
- Dr. Paul Joseph I. Faith: Often “faith” is nothing more than a wishful thinking – “I hope everything works out all right”. Faith is a measure of Christian maturity. Illustration: A toddler jumping on a swimming pool by seeing and trusting his dad who is standing in the pool will catch him. Another Illustration: One night a house caught fire and a young boy was forced to flee to the roof. His father kept yelling: "Jump! I will catch you." But the boy protested, "Daddy, I can't see you." The father replied, "But I can see you and that's all that matters." Definition! Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see”. II. Quotes “True Faith is Trusting God for the impossible” – John Chacha “God our Father has made all things depend on faith so that whoever has faith will have everything, and whoever does not have faith will have nothing” - Martin Luther. “Faith for my deliverance is not faith in God. Faith means, whether I am visibly delivered or not, I will stick to my belief that God is love. There are some things only learned in a fiery furnace” - Oswald Chambers “Faith is to believe what we do not see; and the reward of this faith is to see what we believe” – Augustine III. What God requires of men? A group of people once asked Jesus, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” John 6:29 - To believe in the one God has sent IV. What are some of the unworthy objects that we often place our faith? a. Capability, Strength, Capacity, Wealth etc. (Psalm 33:16-18). b. Men at higher places (Psalm 146:3). c. Our strength (Proverbs. 8:26). d. Wisdom, Strength, Riches (Jeremiah 9:23). V. Who should be the object of our Faith? GOD (March 11:22) V. What sin can exclude us from seeing God work? Unbelief (Mathew 13:58) “The opposite of faith is not doubt; it is unbelief. Doubt only needs more facts. Unbelief is disobedience and refuses to act in accordance with what God has declared”. Satan’s strongest arrow/weapon to a Christian is: Doubt; God’s mightiest shield to His children is: Faith VI. What Faith can bring in one’s life? 1. Isaiah 28:16 - No dismay; 2. Romans 10:11 - No shame; 3. Hebrews 11:6 - Pleases GOD VII. Circumstances we must have faith in HIM. Psalm 62:8 – “Trust in Him at all times, O people” 1. Trusting God when things are impossible by worldly wisdom (I Kings 17: 1-6). Animals/reptiles/birds/insects obeyed God: Ravens, Fish, Dove, Donkey, Jackals, Owls (Isaiah 43:20), Flies, Frogs, locusts, Gnats. 2. Trusting in God with humility even your life is in good shape (Luke 7:1-10). 3. Trusting in God with obedience & submission even in circumstances you think you might incur loss (Genesis 22:1-19; I Kings 17:2-16; Luke 21: 1-4). VIII. Conclusion: 1. Without Faith we cannot pray; and with out Prayer we cannot exercise our Faith. 2. If you believe you will see the Glory of God; even if you do not see the glory of God immediately would you continue to believe him? 3. Having faith in Him is not just believing Him for his blessings but trusting and submitting us to His will. 4. All God need is your one time living life and that’s it. This is just to shape you, mould you and fulfill the purpose he made you. 5. There is always obedience associated with Faith resulting in miracles. Faith and Obedience go side by side like the two legs of a walking person that will lead to miracles or lessons. 6. Trials in our life are for purpose. Faith is what we learn from the trials that help us to truly humble our lives before God and men move further in our Christian maturity. Paul Joseph, Atlanta Indian
